Checking For Scoliosis With Chiropractic

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that often occurs in a growth spurt right before puberty. It’s often checked for in public schools, but is not always early or consistent enough.

While scoliosis is sometimes caused by muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy, the leading cause is still unknown. What doctors do know is that it’s usually hereditary, so if a parent or grandparent has had it they should definitely make sure their child is checked. Also, though both sexes can develop scoliosis, girls have a much higher likelihood of the curvature worsening and requiring treatment.

Most cases of scoliosis are mild and occasionally caused by muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy, but the leading cause is currently unknown. In worse cases where the spine curves too much, it can have an impact on the space in the chest cavity and make it harder to breathe. Some warning signs of scoliosis include:

  • Uneven hips
  • Uneven waist line
  • Uneven shoulders
  • One shoulder being more predominant than the other

Mild curves can develop without anyone noticing because they aren’t obvious to the naked eye and don’t cause any pain. Your chiropractor can use manual methods as well as x-rays to monitor a child’s spinal growth and determine early on what (if any) treatments are needed.
